FUN FACTS

  • Deltas was the founding organization of the Asian Pacific American Student Assembly (APASA) — the student body at USC responsible for major administrative and funding decisions of 25+ Asian-American student organizations on campus.

  • One of our Delta alumni, the late Frances Hashimoto (Delta Class), was a devoted community leader in Little Tokyo and successfully ran her family company Miyakawa — the inventor of mochi ice cream! The Frances K. Hashimoto Plaza in Little Tokyo was unveiled in November 2012 and can be found at the intersection of Azusa and Second streets.

  • Deltas are a diverse bunch! Our sisters come from all around the world, including: Thailand, Taiwan, Malaysia, Hong Kong, the United Kingdom, China, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore and many more!

HISTORY

In the spring of 1960, eleven Asian co-eds of the University of Southern California organized the need to foster sisterhood among Asian women and to stimulate an intercultural exchange among themselves and their fellow students at USC. These eleven charter members, with the help of Miss Shirley Barclay, counselor of Women’s Organization, and the sponsor Mrs. Theodore Chen, drew up the sorority constitution, which was officially approved on May 6th, 1960.

On June 10th, 1960, these eleven young women were formally presented as the Delta Phi Kappa sorority at the Thunderbird Hotel in El Segundo.

These charter members are:

Miss Brenda Song (President)
Miss Jean Chew (Vice President)
Miss Sandi Nakai (Secretary)
Miss Merri Kita (Treasurer)
Miss Kathy Mayekawa (Historian)
Miss Mary Chow
Miss Jeanie Mori
Miss Janice Ouchi
Miss Marlene Sue
Miss Susie Sogabe
Miss Midori Sunari
